What Is Crown Lengthening?
Some patients may have damaged or decayed teeth that don’t leave our dentists enough room to safely apply a dental crown. When this happens, crown lengthening is needed to provide more surface area for our dentists to work.
This is done by reshaping your gum tissue so that more tooth becomes exposed. Most crown lengthening procedures are performed in less than an hour, although the more teeth needing treatment, the longer your appointment will take. This is an outpatient procedure that requires local anesthesia and possibly a sedative.
After your gums have been properly reshaped, they will be sutured back together. You will need to allow for proper healing before you will be able to get dental crowns, so be sure to follow any instructions given to you. This will ensure faster and safer healing.
How Long Is Recovery?
Following your crown lengthening procedure, you will need to go through a healing process. This can take up to three months to complete. It’s important to take it easy for the first three days following your procedure.
Afterward, you may return to your normal lifestyle as long as you use caution around your gums. You should use ice packs to help reduce possible swelling and avoid foods that are too hot or too cold for the first 24 hours following your crown lengthening. Medications may be prescribed to help control any pain and to prevent infection from developing.
